I am kind of overwhelmed with the whole breast feeding thing. I know I am going to need pads to insert into my bra for leakage, but do I really need a nursing bra or can I just use my own?
The nursing bra has panels that open for easy access, as well as a place to put the nursing pads so they won't slip.
The panels used to have hook & loop fasteners, but I imagine they are velcro or something more modern now.
If you aren't sure you are going to breastfeed, just buy one or two to cut down on the expense, but I found them very handy.
You really need the support so going braless isn't a good idea, and it's too hard to nurse wearing a regular one unless you keep it so loose that it pretty much negates the support factor.
As for nursing tops, you can most likely get by w/o those by wearing baby doll tops and other loose-fitting shirts or button-down shirts. I was never one for whipping it out in public, and if you are the same way you aren't going to need anything particularly stylish or fancy, just functional! You will probably also want to get some extra thin receiving blankets or burp cloths to use to cover up for extra privacy.
Talk to a breastfeeding consultant when you are in the hospital, or contact a rep from La Leche League in your area if you are overwhelmed by any other aspects of breastfeeding--I highly believe it is worth it, but it can be a challenge at first if you don't know anyone to ask questions.

If you plan on nursing while outside of the home, you’ll definitely need a nursing bra. Nursing bras are SO much easier, though, I’d recommend one anyways – whether you’re home or not.

It’s just more convenient when you want to get one out at a time without having to stretch the cups out.

You can use your own, but a nursing bra makes it easier to pull out the boob. And they sometimes have pockets to put the pad in, to prevent it from slipping.
If you can’t find one that is comfortable, then use your own.

U need one or 3 !

Yes- unless you want to undress to nurse the baby- doesn’t work in public.
Get a good nursing bra- the cheaper ones are worthless. I got 2 good ones and just washed often. I also recomend the sleeping bra- you will need the extra support at all times.
I am fairly blessed in the chest area- if you are smaller you might feel different.

Depends on how much convienence you want when you pump or nurse. It’s much more comfortable. The Medela brand is the only way to go.

you will get so frustrated after a while if you dont use one. the nursing bra not only is easy access to the nipple…but it supports you so you dont sag. wear it to bed too!

I really suggest a nursing bra. Much more convenient. Otherwise you will have to undo your bra, or pull it up or down.
Does your hospital or doc’s office a breastfeeding class? This would help with your overwhelmed feeling.

The primary difference between a nursing bra and a regular one is that you can pull back some of the bra to allow the baby access to your nipple without removing the entire bra (which might require taking off your top).
So … if you’re not planning on feeding baby, then no, you don’t need a nursing bra.

you can use your own but if ya have the extra money it makes things easier

It makes it so much easier to nurse the baby when you have a nursing bra… they make nursing tops too but i never used those.

It makes it a billion times easier if you have a nursing bra, you can find nice ones anywhere. If you wear underwire and they are not nursing bras, then it’s uncomfortable to lift it and if you wear the pads, then they may fall out when you lift them.
They aren’t uncomfortable, no one will notice the difference. I actually got a few great ones from Walmart, I got some nice tank nursing bras from Target that worked great in the hospital under my PJ’s.

When i was nursing i used my own its just a wast of money i think and the best pads are the cotton ones the disposable ones would rip in my bra

Nursing bras are really handy. Get one and you’ll find it much easier.
Don’t be overwhelmed, we carry these breasts around our whole lives to give sustenance to our children. It’s natural, it’s beautiful and you’ll feel so very close to your little one while you’re feeding him/her.
Best of luck and congratulations!

They are definitely a bit more comfortable than regular bras, and the best thing about them is the convenience of flapping down the bra cup to nurse your child, vs. having to pull your entire bra up over your boob to expose for nursing.

just wear nursing pads in your normal bra

Congrats on trying to BF. It will take time for you to become totally comfortable with it but it is just the greatest thing for bonding with your child. I never had to use pads for leakage. I bought a whole bunch and they are still unused in my dresser. So, wait to see how you milk flow develops, since every mom is unique. Also, I bought some nursing bras just to get easy access. I also wear normal bras and sport bras. Remember, though, you might increase your cup size once the milk comes in.

You can use your own, but you will go up in size, so you might as well get some nursing bras anyways. They are just so much easier, esp. at 3 am or in the middle of a crowded restaurant. I did not know this until the last month of my breastfeeding, but if you go to motherhood maternity’s website, or store, they have nursing bras of every type. There are even nursing push up bras! They are very affordable, too. And, let me recommend Johnson’s nursing pads, they are shaped like a nipple, and are the most absorbent, without leaving your skin wet. Good luck, and stick to it. Once you get used to it, its a piece of cake!

I personally never used them. I found them annoying, I couldnt undo it in time or do it back up. It was all just to fiddly when you have hungry baby to feed.
So I used my own bra’s that way I was comfortable and able to get my boob out in time. The nursing pads fit just as well in a normal bra or nursing bra.
I’d say get one and try it on and see how you feel and if you can undo it and do it back up. It’s all what makes you comfortable and makes life easier.

of course you can just use your own, but it is so much easier to have a nursing bra so you can get to feeding really quick.
